Over Expansion Of Money Supply Economics Essay
Over Expansion Of Money Supply Economics Essay Inflation is commonly understood as a situation of considerable and quick general increase in the prices of the currency over a period of time. The general prices are measured through price indices. The trend of prices reveals the course of inflation or deflation. Inflation is statistically measured in terms of percentage increase in the price index- usually a year or a month. Economist Harry Johnson defines as a substained rise in price. Inflation rises because of rise in the price of the imported commodities like oil, gold, etcà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦. Effects of Inflation: Middle class family will be in trouble if a price of things rises faster than their income. Inflation reduces the value of an investment if returns are inadequate to compensate. Attack of Inflation often goes hand in hand with inflamed economy. Sustained inflation also has long-term effectsà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦. If money is losing its value than businessmen and investors will not invest money for long time. This effects on nations productive capacity. It can cause a rapid economic slow-down. Types of inflation: There are main 5 catagories which devides inflation in several parts. According to rate of inflation According to nature of time-period of occurance According to the scope or coverages According to governments reaction According to the causes According to the rate of inflation: Moderate inflation-(a) creeping inflation (b) walking inflation Running inflation Galloping inflation Hyper inflation Moderate inflation: When prices rise by less than 10% (single digit inflation rate) per annum, running inflation occurs. According to Prof. Samuelson, it is a stable inflation and not serious economic problem. it doesnt interrupt the economic balance. Peoples expectations remain more or less stable in moderate Inflation. Interest rate is never too low or -ve in this situation so money plays its role as a future investment tool. Creeping Inflation: When price rises not more than 3% it is called creeping inflation. It is the mildest form of inflation and also known as a mild inflation or low inflation. Walking Inflation: When the rate of rising prices is more than the creeping inflation is known as walking Inflation. When prices rise more than 3% but less than 10% per annum than its walking inflation. Running Inflation: When the movement of prices speed up rapidly, running inflation emerge. Running inflation may record more than 100% rice in a decade. Thus, when prices rise more than 10% a year, it is called Running Inflation. Double-digit inflation of 10-20% per annum is called running inflation. Galloping Inflation: If prices rise by double or triple digit inflation rates it is called galloping inflation. When prices rise more than 20% and less than 1000%, galloping inflation occurs. It is also referred as JUMPING Inflation. India is facing this inflation since second 5 year plan period. It is very serious problem. It causes economic distortions and disturbances. Hyper Inflation: In this case, prices rise every moment and there is no limit to the height to which prices might rise. Therefore, it is difficult to measure its scale as prices rise by fits and starts. In statistic terms when prices rise more than 1000% it is caalled Hyper Inflation. There is atleast a 50% price rise in a month so that in year it rises about 130 times. It represet the pitiable fall in peoples purchasing power. It is generated by immese monetary disorder. It is monetary disease. The velocity circular of money increases very fast. Causes of Inflation: Increase in money supply: Inflation is caused by an increase in the supply of money which leads to increase in demand.higher the growth of nominal money supply, higher the inflation. Increase in disposable income: When disposable demand increases demand will increase which will emerge inflation. Over expansion of money supply: Remarkable degree of correlation between the increase in money supply and the rise in the price level mayb be observed. Increase in Exports: When the demand for domestically produced goods increase in foreign country raises the earnings of the industries producing export commodities. Cost-push Inflation: Here the supply of goods and services are stopped for some or other reason while the demand remains unchanged. This push is cost. Generated by the factors like wages, profit and material cost in turn this increases the cost of production and ultimately the price of product and services. Demand-pull Inflation: Here peoples demand is continuosly rising and the supply is unchanged or same. Here people are ready to pay for the demanded goods to satisfy their need. Calculation of inflation: Inflation can be calculated by many methida but main 3 methods areà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦. CPI- Consumer Price Index WPI- Wholesale Price Index PPI- Product Price Index CPI- Consumer Price Index measures changes in the price level ofà consumer goodsà andà servicesà purchased by households. It can be used to index the real value of wages, salaries, pensions, for regulagting prices and for deflacting monetory magnitudes to show changes in real value. CPI=updated cost/base period cost*100 WPI- Wholesale Price Index WPI is the price of a representative basket of wholesale goods. The indian WPI figure is released every 10 days and influances stock and fixed priced markets. WPI focuses on the price of goods traded between corporations rather than goods bought by consumers which is measured by CPI. The purpose of the WPI is to monitor price movements that reflect supply and demand in industry, manufacturing and construction. In India WPI is the indicator for inflation rate. PPI- Product Price Index This index measures the pressure on producers due to change in cost of raw -materials. Inflation Rate = (Po-P-1)*100/P-1 Here, Po= the present average price of goods and services. P-1=the price of the products and services existed last year. Trend of inflation since 1991 to 2012 Year Annual Rate 1990-1991 13.81 1991-1992 11.88 1992-1993 6.31 1993-1994 10.24 1994-1995 10.22 1995-1996 8.98 1996-1997 7.25 1997-1998 13.17 1998-1999 4.84 1999-2000 4.02 2000-2001 2.72 2001-2002 3.8 2002-2003 3.4 2003-2004 5.4 2004-2005 6.4 2005-2006 4.4 2006-2007 5.3 2007-2008 4.7 2008-2009 12.44 2009-2010 10.2 2010-2011 9.4 2011-2012 1.4(till July) Reasons of the Inlation in 1990s: Increase in international oil price. Natural disasters like drought or flood showed an ebbing trend. The main problem of inflation came to head in August 1990. When iraq invaded Kuwait the prices of oil doubled in international market. Trade deficit in 1991 rose to 15600 cores. India borrowed from IMF. C:UsersmaitriDownloadsindia-inflation-rate.png (source: www.google.com) Reasons for Inflation in early 20th century: Increase in oil prices twice during the period. Adverse effects of deficiency of agricultural products led to increase in price ofà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦Ã ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ Oilseeds and Edible oil. In 2008, Inflation was because of rise in fuel prices, and rise in prices of primary articles. Global food prices also registered a marked rise during this period. Trend of Inflation rates since 1991-2012: In 1990-91, the inflation rate rose by 12.1% and got constant at double digits in consecutive year it means India faced Running Inflation. Similarly Running Inflation India faced until Inflation rate fall to 5% in 1995-96. In 1998-99, there was again rise in prices and inflation was there. In 2002, Inflation was @ its low rating 1.6% but the upward trend become smooth and again the inflation became a cause for concern in the year 2004 when the point to point rise in inflation was 7.7%. In 2006, the Inflation was so high till the starting months of 2007. In 2008, infltion was there because of rose in price of oil and primary articles. Food inflation was there in 2008 as India is the primary importer of the food among the world. In 2009, food grain prices continued to be culprit behind the raising inflation year 2009. There was a great fall from 2008 to 2009 and it was -0.34% if there is negative inflation rate that means purchasing power of people increase but there is lack of supply. In 2010, there was rose in average rate by 1.64% and in 2011 there was rose of 3.16%. Correlation between gold price, crude oil price and dollar: Relation between gold and dollar: Gold and dollar both are global currancies. Many national banks hold dollars as a reserve currency. They both are considered stable and strong. If people are worried for the dollar which will may fall iin future than they should invest in gold. The relationship between both of them is inverse. Buying gold and selling dollar will have the effect of moving both prices inversly. As the dollars exchange value falls, it takes more dollar to buy gold so dollar gold price rises. When dollars exchange value rises due to any reason it takes fewer dollar to buy a gold. Gold and dollar relationship is strategic but not tactical. Dollar weknesses always turn into gold strength (in long term) but (in short term) gold and dollar both may can fall or rise together. When inflation rises people buy gold which make golds price up. Weakness of dollar make gold strong in long term scenerio and in short-term scenerio there maybe a condition that dollar and gold will rise and fall together. Whenever inflation comes people buy more and more gold which automatically rise the price of gold. Realtionship between Crude oil prices and dollar: (Chart from 1977 to 2003) Year Yearly Average 1991 $20.19 1992 $19.25 1993 $16.74 1994 $15.66 1995 $16.75 1996 $20.46 1997 $18.97 1998 $11.91 1999 $16.55 2000 $27.40 2001 $23.00 2002 $22.81 2003 $27.69 2004 $37.41 2005 $50.04 2006 $58.30 2007 $64.20 2008 $91.48 2009 $53.56 2010 $71.21 2011 $87.48 2012 $83.7 (estimated) Recent trend of crude oil and dollar: (8/18/2012) DX_CL_Correlation.jpg Increasing oil price results in increase of inflation. It impacts economy negatively. Higer oil prices are reflected in virtually every finished product as well as food and commodities in general. Crude oil is mainly traded in US dollar and when US dollar prices weakens the crude oil participants push the price of crude higher on the expectations. Effects on demand: Oil purchases are paid in dollars. However demand is dependednt on the domestic price of country which always fluctuate with chnages in dollar. So dollar depreciation reduces the oil price in domestic currancy. This leads to an increase in their real income and an increase in their oil demand. Therefore, the dollar depreciation a priori has a positive impact on oil demand and should contribute to raise the price. Effects on supply: Dollar changes affect the price as supposed by the producers less than the one apparent by demanders. Dollar depreciation can activate inflation and income in oil producer countries, the currencies which are linked to US dolalr. The increase in inflation and the decrease in purchasing power reduce the real disposable income and therefore the income available for drilling, everything else equals. Overall, a dollar depreciation may result in a reduction in oil supply. Overall, depreciation of dollar causes an increase in oil demand and a reduction in supply, mainly on the long run, which tends to boost oil price. Realtionship between Gold, Crude oil and dollar in inflation: An increase in oil price resukts in inflation which affects the countries those importing oil.it affects the prices in general economy. According to a study, the global resource of oil is depleting at an annual rate of 6 per cent while demand is growing at an annual rate of 2 per cent. Era of cheap oil is over now but now we have to see impact of oil prices on dollar and gold. Up to 1971 central banks were giving facility of converting dollar into gold. When this facility was removed, oil producing countries converted dollar into gold. There is positive relation between gold and oil since last 5 years. With recent increase in oil, relationship between gold n oil is not moving in cycle. if the price of oil increase due to supply and demand mismatch and dollar declines than gold/silver price will increase.

The Italian Essay -- essays research papers
In Ann Radcliffe's "The Italian", the very first thing that we see described is a veiled woman: "It was in the church of San Lorenzo at Naples, in the year 1758, that Vincentio di Vivaldi first saw Ellena di Rosalba. The sweetness and fine expression of her voice attracted his attention to her figure, which had a distinguished air of delicacy and grace; but her face was concealed in her veil. So much was he fascinated by the voice, that a most painful curiosity was excited as to her countenance, which he fancied must express all the sensibility of character that the modulation of her tones indicated" (5).Even without knowing anything about Gothic elements, this indicates very clearly what the quality and tone of the book are going to be like. Vivaldi's pursuit of the veiled woman is a signal that his is the pursuit of the mysterious, with the certainty that it will be beautiful. This certainly does seem to be a great fascination in the novel; it is a component and often a catalyst for that anxiety which runs throughout. It is this anxiety which causes the heightening of our emotions; our emotions are heightened as we watch the characters' pursuit of the mysterious; and our curiosity is excited more and more until we are nearly begging for its gratification. But Radcliffe heightens our emotions without satisfying our curiosity, or at least not enough. For example, the very first chapter establishes a sense of mystery about the assassin in the Church. The Englishman inquires as much for himself as for us about the assassin. His concern and state of shock invoke our own inquiry into this odd circumstance and then his Italian friend tells him a mystery without actually telling him anything:"'He [the assassin] sought sanctuary here', replied the friar; 'within these walls he may not be hurt'"(2).He makes it clear that there is a story here but that it is long and suspenseful, maybe shocking:"'It is much too long to be related now; that would occupy a week; I have it in writing, and will send you the volume'" (3).What it is exactly, or what the tale is going to be is only hinted at in a very curiosity invoking way: as if it is a secret.Instead of the Englishman and his Italian friend going down to the street cafà © and relating the story, the Italian friend says that he will send him something written the following day and t... ...ld be suspect and it was. Her susceptible nature often led her into the suspicion out of which the novel's Gothic tone is constructed; just like Vivaldi's and Paolo's susceptible natures lead them to jump to most horrifying conclusions earlier in the novel. When talking about perceptions, it is impossible to omit the distinction between the real and unreal in "The Italian". The strand of reality, interwoven with fantasy, seems to be a driving force in the plot. In the episode involving Ellena, her suspicions are confirmed; her fantasy becomes confirmed as reality as her fears about Spalatro's intentions are confirmed (although not until the end). Of notice is also Vivaldi's constant desire to solidify his fantasy (getting married) with Ellena; as if the real thing will finally restrict the fearful possibilities into a single reality. Yet it is this reality from which Vivaldi derives his fearful fantasies. It is this drama between what is real and unreal that gives the novel its impetus. For example, when Marchesa is speaking to Schedoni, they are both thinking of murder, but both refuse to 'say' it, as if doing so would make it more 'real' than merely thinking about it.

Australians Against Further Immigration Essay -- essays research paper
Australians Against Further Immigration OUR VIEW Environment Humanitarianism Economics Health Defences Education Culture Australia's immigration policy is disastrous, proceeding as if there is no balance of payment problem, no foreign debt and no geographical or environmental constraints to population growth. Continued immigration will finally and irreversibly alter the natural and urban environment, economic viability and attitudes and culture of our nation. The people have been consulted on, or given their consent to, the interwoven policies of immigration and multiculturalism. It is now time for Australians to demand their democratic rights, reclaim their sovereignty and demand a say in the future of their nation. Australians Against Further Immigration want immigration drastically reduced to zero net. That is, out immigration numbers should merely replace those permanently leaving Australia each year - historically running between 20,000 and 30,000. At this policy of institutionalised, publicly funded multiculturalism should be scrapped. We are a non-racist organisation and attempts to convert the debate to one of race and emotion is a deliberate ploy to silence critics and avoid the real issues. We believe in freedom of speech. The philosopher Spinoza said, ââ¬Å"In a free state every man can think what he wants and say what he thinksâ⬠. This should apply here to debates on immigration. We care about Australia and want to pass our heritage to our children and their children. We want to preserve our Australian identity. We stress that migrants already in Australia are welcome, what we are against is further immigration and the effect this in now having on social harmony. Our opposition is the pro-immigration lobby comprised of big business including the media, the ethnic lobby, churches, misguided humanitarians and both sides of politics. It is our own successive governments inflicting these policies on us and they, not the individual migrant, should bear the blame. We are concerned about the effect of immigration and multiculturalism on this country where as the pro-immigration lobby is only concerned for the migrant or their own interests. ENVIRONMENT Australia, the world's oldest and driest continent, with severe soil degradation and climatic uncertainty - a land of, ââ¬Å"droughts and flooding rainsâ⬠' already faces declining agricultural productiv... ...ars and of course it does not stop there. In a democracy, how dare our government force such changes on the Australian people without their consent, but also against their often polled opinion. IN SUMMARY:- We have a clear choice of accepting increasing immigration with the consequent exploitation of this land and a falling standard of living and quality of life, living in crowded, polluted, high density cities, with over-taxed recreational areas and intercommunal tensions and feeling like strangers in our own country. The economic consequences of an increasing foreign debt, foreign ownership and undesirable, unsustainable economic expansion, will destroy any chance of maintaining the best features of Australian life as we know it. And, as migrant numbers increase, there will be an escalating push for higher migrant intake which eventually will be unstoppable. OR Stoping mass immigration and attempting to live in harmony with our fragile environment, creating an economically and environmental sound, self reliant and self sustaining community, maintaining our quality of life and handing to the next generation a country to be cherished, and free from problems of over population.

His interest in writing short stories like ââ¬Å"The Followersâ⬠stems from the beginning part of his life. à à à à à Thomas spent his days growing up in Swansea, South Whales with his father, a grammar school English teacher. His father encouraged his early interest in reading and writing. Some of his early poetry was published in local literary writing journals. Thomas grew up in the late 1920ââ¬â¢s and the 1930ââ¬â¢s. ââ¬Å"In the 1930ââ¬â¢s, when the trend toward social and political commentary dominated the arts, Thomas began pursuing more personal themes that originated in his own experiencesâ⬠(Gunton and Harris 358). Thomas would then incorporate these experiences into his poetry. For example, the poem ââ¬Å"The Ballad of the Long-Legged Baitâ⬠is about a fisherman he probably saw around growing up in Swansea. In 1934 Thomas began moving between London and several villages where he started drinking a lot and ââ¬Å"epitomized the raucous image of an artistâ⬠After WW II, Thomas began writing more short stories rather than poetry (Gunton and Harri s 358). à à à à à Much earlier stories focus on a theme of either birth or death. Because of this, Thomasââ¬â¢s early period has been called his ââ¬Å"womb-tombâ⬠era (Gunton and Harris 358). As Thomasââ¬â¢s writing style evolved, he would begin to experiment with new techniques. He started using vibrant images and using sound as ââ¬Å"verbal musicâ⬠, creating his own poetic style (Gunton and Harris 358). However, many times Thomas will try to convey emotions that are too complex for any lyrical treatment. Other times the opposite can be true and he gives too intricate an elaboration to simple feelings (Olsen 366). These elements of Thomasââ¬â¢ style are evident in his poems and stories, such as ââ¬Å"The Followersâ⬠. à à à à à The roster of characters in ââ¬Å"The Followersâ⬠are the unnamed narrator, his good pal Leslie, and a girl whom they call ââ¬Å"Hermoitte Weatherbyâ⬠. The narrator and Leslie meet in a pub on a rainy, London night. They leave after a while, due to lack of funds and decide to have a spot of fun by following a girl they donââ¬â¢t know (Hermoitte) to her home. They spend the evening watching ââ¬Å"Hermoitteâ⬠and her mom doing a lot of nothing they are discovered by them and a third unknown voice inside. They flee their window perch in a hurry and call it a night.

Engaging with God: A Biblical Theology of Worship Essay
As is well known, the urge to worship is an innate drive of humankind. Through the ages, people from all walks of life have appealed to a deity for assistance, protection, and salvation. Then, through various ceremonies of praise and thanksgiving, countless societies have expressed appreciation for the bounties of life. Further, chapter seven blatantly stresses that the idea during the ancient times in building the church and the assembly of the people for service to God has been a consistent aim in providing the needs of humankind in the most spiritual sense of sagacity. As the Roman Empire crumbled and Christianity ascended, early Christians adopted the basilica as a temple for worship, adapting a secular dwelling to religious needs. The dominance of its form and the dignity of its purpose in accommodating the liturgical needs of the Church seem to have appropriately reflected the triumph of Christianity. But Paulââ¬â¢s use of the word ââ¬Å"justificationâ⬠has been greatly misunderstood in contemporary theology. For Paul, justification does not denote an event or process by which one is saved. Justification is not ââ¬Å"so much about soteriology as about ecclesiology. â⬠Itââ¬â¢s far more concerned with discerning ââ¬Å"who is inâ⬠rather than the process through which one ââ¬Å"gets in. â⬠Justification is concerned about how one can discern ââ¬Å"who is a member of the covenant family. â⬠Faith is the ââ¬Å"badge of covenant membership, not something someone ââ¬Ëperformsââ¬â¢ as a kind of initiation test. â⬠The law court is the ââ¬Å"metaphorical mean through which the covenant purposes of God are fulfilled. Some people may even call God different names but the level ground that all these people have is the belief in something higher than the mortal soul. Although some may refute this as merely assumptions but investigating the self clearly, there is this certain uncertainty of being a mortal, of being a mere human being. However, this may be beside the point. Religious tolerance can not only promote appreciation for other religions but it could also stop religious conflicts. People have tendencies on neglecting what is basic on the Commandments of God, it on love thy neighbors and if this love would necessitate tolerance then peaceful interactions could be attained. However, Paul remained in the belief that through the structure of the church, and the gathering of the people in edification, what is seemingly important in such scenario is the idea that these individuals come together in the light of praising Godââ¬âthat whatever it is that may have possibly been ââ¬Å"differentâ⬠within each other, is not a hindrance to praise one God and spread the word to humankind in that instance. Moreover, incorporating certain characteristics of Greek architecture, but often surpassing it structurally, the ancient Roman temple was likewise a magnificent work of stone visually representing the important role of religion in society. Reflecting the values of secular society, the Roman basilica, a court building and meeting hall, similarly evolved into an imposing form, also prominently situated, while the exterior of the Classical civic temple projected monumentality appropriate for a central public building, the interior, with its spatial organization of narthex, nave, and chancel, echoed solemnity of important functions, including religious ceremonies. Rows of columns defining side aisles adjacent to the nave effused dignity of purpose while rhythmically moving the eye forward to the chancel with its sacred altar. Review on Chapter Nine What is going on around them, in the social and political life of their power of false religion? In most part of the world, Jesus Christ is not a stranger in concept and in fame. Some books in the Holy Bible were even devoted to discussing and retelling the life of Jesus Christ. It could be seen then that the main writers or proponents regarding the accounting of Jesusââ¬â¢ life and works were written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Few words are as deeply freighted as ââ¬Å"religion,â⬠and few raise so many questions. If the first is ââ¬Å"What is the meaning of life? â⬠others follow rapidly. At the pedestrian level of empirical discourse, some obvious ones arise. Is religion one or several? If the latter, what do they have in common, and why are there so many of them? How did they arise? Why are they so different? What has determined their content and their demographic boundaries? What distinguishes religion or religions from other types of human conduct? Why do particular religions emerge and disappear? Is religion a social phenomenon or a property of individuals? Are all individuals religious? Is religion a delusory form of wishful thinking or a kind of understanding? Is it an unavoidable aspect of human existence or a characteristic of one phase of human history? To all these questions and more, different people will give different answers, but one thing is certain: the answers we give on the empirical level will depend on the way we conceive of our humanity. In the light, ââ¬Å"religionâ⬠came to designate something apparently common to all peoples: their avowal that they were obligated by supernatural powers to act in certain ways. But beyond that vague similarity, the term had no specific content. Religion was only real, observable, and meaningful in its concrete instances, Latin polytheism, Judaism, Catholicism, Lutheranism, and so forth, and that rich meaning was provided by the adherents of each of those religions themselves. ââ¬Å"Religionâ⬠had no ontological status beyond that of a convenient term to point to an amazing variety of real, but mutually contradictory, sets of beliefs about gods or god and the conduct by which they were expressed. One of the most notable conflicts that have been debated by many scholars since the medieval ages is the controversy regarding the place of philosophy and religion in a society. The two have been used to attack each other in order to uphold their own credibility. The study of Philosophy is directed towards the speculation of the things that govern the world and its processes, and the nature of man and his relationship with other individuals as well as with the world (Gasset, 1964). Philosophy attempts to scrutinize and make rational explication of almost everything that can be grasped by the human mind. Yet, it does not really provide sufficient and concrete answers to all its queries. Religion, on the other hand, focuses its scope on explaining things and phenomena that cannot be explained by science and at some point even those that cannot really be made explicit by philosophy. It tries to give reason for everything that is happening. Its justification for every reason that it provides is primarily founded on faith (Nasr, 1996). Hence, by faith, it need not be verifiable. A strong faith or believe could suffice oneââ¬â¢s doubt and hesitation.
Ball and Brown Essay
In 1968 Raymond Ball and Phillip Brown published ââ¬ËAn empirical evaluation of accounting income numbersââ¬â¢ in the Journal of Accounting research. After an initial lukewarm response from the academic community it rapidly became what the American Accounting Association now calls ââ¬Ëthe seed that made a differenceââ¬â¢. The purpose of this essay is to introduce the study of Ball and Brown(motivations, research questions and findings) and identify its significant contributions in capital markets research. Introduction According to the resources provided, Ball and Brown described the motivation for their study as a test of existing scholarly research that painted a dim picture of reported earnings. The early articles concluded that earnings could not be informative, and therefore major changes to accounting practice where necessary to correct the problem. In their research, Ball and Brown sought to answer the simple fundamental research question: are accounting income numbers useful? Their position was summarised: ââ¬Å"An empirical evaluation of accounting income numbers requires agreement as to what real-world outcome constitutes an appropriate test of usefulness. Because net income is a number of particular interest to investors, the outcome we use as a predictive criterion is the investment decision as it is reflected in security pricesâ⬠(Ball and Brown 1968). Ball and Brown found that when stocks had a positive income surprise, the abnormal stock price returns for the event window were also likely to be positive, and vice versa. They also found that a majority of the increase in the abnormal returns was before the announcement date, which implied that analysts have fairly accurate forecasts of whether firms will outperform or underperform. Significance of their contributions Although there does have some limitations in Ball and Brownââ¬â¢s study, it had a significant impact on later research. Ball and Brown (1968) provide compelling evidence that there is information content in accounting earnings announcements. In the meantime, they correlate the sign of the abnormalà stock return in the month of an earnings announcement with the sign of the earnings change of a certain firmââ¬â¢s earnings in a previous year earnings. Starting with Ball and Brown (1968), many studies used such association with stock returns to compare alternative accounting performance measures, such as historical cost earnings, current cost earnings, residual earnings, operating cash flows, and so on. As Watts and Zimmerman point out, most accounting research since Ball and Brown (1968) has been positive, and the role of accounting theory is no longer normative. Ball and Brown (1968) heralded the positive-economics-based empirical capital markets research in the late 1960s.Concurrent developments in economics and finance constituted the theoretical and methodological impetus to the early capital markets research in accounting. In addition, their study initially provides reliable evidence that stock markets can influence annual reports. Then researchers began to do a lot in reflect of stock market. Furthermore, the method used is also applicable to a large number of accounting and financial issues, including dividend announcements, earnings announcements, mergers and acquisitions, and investment spending. 3. Conclusion Ball and Brown (1969) expressed a view of information in markets that was revolutionary and contributed to a significant change in attitudes towards investing and financial markets. By testing the connection between earnings expectations and share price changes they were the genesis of a body of research that now underpins modern day investment processes. References Jackson, S.
